McGrath III, Hon. Honorable Matthew L., (Ret.)
Matt recently retired from the Mass. District Court after eight and a half years of service. During his tenure on the Court, He served on the court’s Civil Committee where he helped train other judges in civil matters. He presided over thirty civil bench and jury trials involving personal injury, breach of contract, breach of warranty, property damage, and c. 93A claims. Matt is a native of the West Roxbury section of Boston and graduated from Boston Latin School, Boston College and Boston College Law School. Upon passing the Bar in 1979, Matt joined the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. During his next seven years in that office, Matt argued several appeals before both Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. He tried several hundred bench trials and approximately thirty felony jury trials to verdict He also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In addition to his legal career, Matt served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an intelligence officer from 1985 to 1992.
Matt left the District Attorney’s office in December of 1986 and began practice with the Law Offices of Robert E. Noonan, staff counsel for then Commercial Union Insurance Company. During the next twenty-three and a half years, Matt handled mostly personal injury litigation for first Commercial Union, then CGU and finally OneBeacon, Tower and NGIC. In 2016, Matt opened the Law Office of Matthew L. McGrath, a general practice firm in Framingham. He has arbitrated and mediated several hundred claims for both insureds and the companies themselves. He has tried approximately sixty jury actions to verdict.
Matt has served as an arbitrator and mediator since 1994 when he began handling cases for the American Arbitration Association. He has heard actions for Case Closed since the early 2000s. He has served as an arbitrator in approximately 100 actions since 1994 and has acted as a mediator in approximately a dozen claims.
Although most of Matt’s practice has been for insurance companies, he has performed plaintiff work in the past. He has a solid grasp as to the fair value of any personal injury or property damage action.
